Back Lane Spouts or Rose Gully

NGR 77630 46236
Site Number: C102
Area 1. Malvern Town Centre Springs and Wells
Malvern Hills, England

Location: Back Lane, below the supermarket car park.
Description: A landscaped area with ornamental fountain with three running spouts surrounded by blue bricks set in the car park retaining wall.

This water feature was completed in 2000 as part of the building of the Waitrose store. The water is not suitable for drinking, being a mixture of Prior's Vineyard spring water, ground and surface water. This is a spot to pause and contemplate that this is where the monks of Malvern once cultivated their produce: today we buy it pre-packed from the supermarket that now occupies the same land.

This water feature was completed in 2000 as part of the building and landscaping of the Waitrose supermarket. A competition to name the feature resulted in 'Rose Gully'. It is said that the 'Rose' was the second syllable of 'Waitrose', and 'Gully' a reminder of Dr Gully, the town's foremost water cure practitioner of the 19th century. When wags suggested that it sounded like an attempt to stifle a smelly drain or gully with roses, an explanatory plaque was erected. We prefer the tradional name Back Lane Spouts.

In 2014 this site won the Founders Award for Well Decorating as part of the May Day celebrations. The decorating was carried out by the Holy Trinity team and the prize presented by Cora, founder of Well Decorating in the Malverns in 1993.
